Why did you choose 91��Ƭ�� at MSU?

I chose 91��Ƭ�� at MSU, specifically the interior design program, because I wanted to be able to express my creativity in a structured way. Before I started the program, I didn't realize just how much interior designers do to help people each day. Once I learned more, I knew it was the major for me! I love that our classes are so small because we all really get to know each other. It's so encouraging to always know that we are so willing to help one another. All the students and faculty are so passionate about their work, which is very uplifting.

Favorite spot on campus?

Besides the studio of course, my favorite spot on campus is Chadwick lake—especially at sunset! It's such a beautiful place to wind down at the end of a long day.

If you could go back and tell your high school self one thing, what would it be?

If I could go back and tell my high school self one thing, it would be to trust the Lord's plan for my life and not to doubt myself and my work so much. Everything will work out in time!

These are a few of my favorite things...

A few of my favorite things are baking, my cat Rosie, rom-coms, shopping, and Diet Coke.

Marguerite Johnson has had a passion for interiors ever since she was a young child.

“I would always find myself reading interior design magazines instead of other magazines that my friends were reading,” said Johnson. “I had an interest in creating beautiful spaces for people to live their daily life, retreat, and spend time with their family and friends.”

With her love of design, Johnson chose Mississippi 91��Ƭ�� specifically because of its outstanding interior design program.

“I toured the interior design program and loved it!” said Johnson. “It’s one of the top interior design programs in the South.”

Graduating from MSU in 2015, Johnson began an internship at Pursley Dixon Architecture in Charlotte, North Carolina. She interned in their interior design department for three months before moving to Birmingham, Alabama to work for Betsy Brown.

“Mississippi 91��Ƭ�� put me in a launching position with a great resume and portfolio to get the job I wanted out of college, and that job led me to where I am today,” said Johnson.

Currently, Johnson and her business partner Anna Still run their own interior design business, Still Johnson, which focuses on residential interior design.

“We try to give our clients a home that is a reflection of them,” said Johnson. “We strive to make their homes beautiful but most importantly functional.”

Johnson, Still, and another MSU graduate, Rachael Burrow, served as co-chairs for the recent Antiques at the Gardens Gala, a fundraiser for the Birmingham Botanical Gardens.

Q&A with Marguerite Johnson

How did MSU prepare you for the job you have now?

“Mississippi 91��Ƭ�� provided me with so many opportunities and ways to get involved. Mississippi 91��Ƭ��’s interior design program does an incredible job of connecting students with other designers, design firms, and connections within the industry. The 91��Ƭ�� program also offers incredible field trips and that exposure of taking students to different cities and showing students how the real-world works was so instrumental in my education experience.”

Did a 91��Ƭ�� professor help you prepare for your career?

“Lindsey and Beth Miller. Lindsey is really great. She uses her knowledge from working in a commercial firm to guide us through our school projects. She helped me understand what skills were most important to learn in school. Beth Miller is the driving force behind the field trips. She took us all over the country and to Europe. Her passion for showing students all of the opportunities in the interior design field opens doors and connections that are so crucial to the success of her students. She does an incredible job!”

Advice for incoming MSU students?

“MSU is an incredible place, a very warm and nurturing community. My advice would be to just jump in, get involved, meet as many people as you can, and give back however you can. Enjoy your time! The more you give, the more you get out of it!”

Why did you choose 91��Ƭ��atMSU?

I chose 91��Ƭ�� at MSU because I wanted to be a part of a program that was going to push me to succeed. The interior design program specifically is so unique because of the community that forms among the students and with the faculty as well. Being in an environment where your fellow classmates and teachers want you to do well is so important and a very visible aspect of 91��Ƭ�� at MSU. After speaking to older students and meeting with some of the faculty, I could tell that this was the type of environment was looking to be a part of.

Favorite spot on campus?

My favorite spot on campus is probably the Chapel of Memories and the area around it. The exterior of the chapel is so beautifully constructed, and the area around the water feature outside is so peaceful and serene.

If you could go back and tell your high school self one thing, what would it be?

I would tell my high school self to really appreciate all of the little things that college has to offer. People always told me that college would fly by, and they were right. College is such an amazing opportunity to get outside of your box and push yourself to grow in a multitude of ways.

Why did you choose 91��Ƭ��atMSU?

I chose 91��Ƭ�� at MSU because I wanted to grow in my knowledge surrounded by people who would continuously encourage me.

Favorite spot on campus?

My favorite spot on campus is the area behind Etheredge Hall. It is surrounded by Ginkgo’s trees, and in the fall they turn a beautiful shade of yellow that is so brilliant I can't put it into words.

If you could go back and tell your high school self one thing, what would it be?

If I could go back and tell my high school self one thing, I would tell her that you can do anything you put your mind to. You will set high goals, but if you just believe in your abilities and have the self-discipline to stick to a schedule, you will excel.

A few of my favorite things are enjoying a smoothie from Juva with friends, learning new things, and watching my favorite TV show with my roommates and our cat Alfredo.

Why did you choose 91��Ƭ��atMSU?

I chose 91��Ƭ�� at MSU because I knew I wanted to be an interior designer from a young age. I have always been a creative person and knew that 91��Ƭ�� would be the perfect fit for me. When I first came to visit, I noticed how close-knit the community was, and everyone’s work ethic inspired me. One of my favorite parts about being in interior design is knowing everyone in my class because I always have a friend if I need help!

Favorite spot on campus?

Etheredge, of course!

If you could go back and tell your high school self one thing, what would it be?

I would tell my high school self to not stress out so much and to trust in God’s plan! It all works out the way it’s supposed to.

Why did you choose 91��Ƭ��atMSU?

I chose 91��Ƭ��, specifically Interior Design, because I knew I wanted to have the opportunity to be creative! I have thoughts and ideas that I want to convey to others in a way that can help others, and 91��Ƭ�� lets me do that! I have loved design for a long time, and when I visited the program I could see how passionate the students and professors were about their work, and that is what I wanted. 91��Ƭ�� inspires me to think in a way I didn't realize I could.

Favorite spot on campus?

My favorite spot on campus has to be the balcony on the second floor of the Union! I love how peaceful it is especially during the fall! I love grabbing a coffee from downstairs and heading up to get some work done!

If you could go back and tell your high school self one thing, what would it be?

If I could tell my high school self one thing it would be to relax just a little more. Keep up your work ethic, but make sure you're enjoying what is in front of you! (Also, start looking at Architectural Digest a little more; you'll love it!)

A few of my favorite things are... traveling to new places, music, flowers (specifically tulips and hydrangeas), sunsets, and looking at the stars!

Why did you choose 91��Ƭ��atMSU?

I chose 91��Ƭ�� because I wanted to cultivate a skill of creating thoughtful spaces. The students and faculty inspired me to be a part of the program that has done nothing but encourage, inspire, and push me toward a career that I have grown so passionate about. The 91��Ƭ�� community itself made the transition to college so welcoming, so I knew I was in the right place!

Favorite spot on campus?

My favorite spot on campus is definitely the balcony at the Union. I love grabbing a coffee and doing work with a view of the Drill Field!

If you could go back and tell your high school self one thing, what would it be?

I would tell my high school self that I have so much to look forward to! College is full of so much growth and self-improvement; just have an open mind and take every opportunity!
